Green Corp was founded in 2012 as an offshoot of a Doctoral Program in Environmental Studies with a focus on Indigenous Sustainability through Environmental Education. The conceptual framework for Green Corp is generally based on the notion that ecological sustainability for Indigenous societies, and to a large extent the mainstream society can be achieved through environmental experiential education. Environmental education is a lifelong education that is beneficial to young children and adults as well. According to environmental education literature/research, children immersed in a rich outdoor, experiential environmental education program at the formative stages tend to show positive attitude towards the environment and ultimately a greater appreciation for nature. This notion is succinctly expressed in Orr (2013) and Matsumoto et al (2022), who argue that children who are engaged in place-based or community based natural experiences develop appreciation for their natural environment, implying that when children actively interact with their environment and natural surroundings, they cultivate harmonious relationships with nature, and therefore, become good stewards of nature – it is difficult to love what you do not have intimate connections/interactions with.
Mission
Green Corps focuses on making children and youths from the subaltern group to be more aware and conscious of their natural environment, boost their interest in caring for and improving the environment and broaden their ecological knowledge of their surrounding and landscape through a rich outdoor experiential activities. Children and youths from marginalized, underprivileged backgrounds are not always opportune to engage in experiential environmental learning like their counterparts from mainstream affluent backgrounds due to economic circumstances. Hence, our aim is to close these gaps and afford these marginalized children the opportunity to learn and interact with their surrounding and natural environment via outdoor experiential activities.
